The Batterer as Parent: Addressing the Impact of Domestic Violence on Family Dynamics
Published in Hardcover by Sage Publications (02 April, 2002)
Authors: Lundy Bancroft and Jay G. Silverman
Average review score:

The best professional book I have read.
This book should be a must read for all Guardian Ad Litems, Custody evaluators, Judges, Lawyers and Therapists. It explains how batterers act, why children often side with the batterer and gives an excellent guide for assessing visitation guidelines. I have only owned the book for two weeks and have already used it with three clients of mine. I am a LMFT and often work with children who have witnessed domestic violence, batterering and whose parents are fighting over custody. In reading this book I have a better understanding for the dymamics in a family with batterering. I now have research to support the things I have been recommending in regards to keeping children safe.

A refreshing look at a microcosm reflecting a larger world.
This delightful book examines the unique theater which one man's vision successfully and energetically designed to examine the pain and parody of an evolving, contemporary American society and body politic. May Beach Blanket Babylon spread it's messages both throughout the American stages and through distribution of this panoramic literary exposition. Yes, proudly, Janet Lynn Roseman is my sister!

A Bedside Nature: Genius and Eccentricity in Science 1869-1953
Published in Hardcover by W H Freeman & Co (September, 1997)
Authors: W. B. Gratzer and Stephen Jay Gould
Average review score:

A Wonderful Diversion
Those of us who love pouring through ancient journals- especially British journals, with their exceedingly polite and ultimately trivial harsplitting over pointless detail have a treasure in this book. The editor has taken and annotated gems from nearly 100 years of publication of this eminant journal, including some very amusing and ultimately pointless debates between a number of eminant Victorians. There are some useful inquiries as well; Francis Galton, having his portrait painted for the umpteenth time, begins a study of the number of brushstrokes used my the artist, and eventually concludes that the number of strokes in a given portrait seems to be consistent between artists and independant of style. Various writers suggest mneumonics for memorizing the significant digits of pi- in various langauges, and various meters.

On the more serious side, there is much discussion of the treatment of war wounds at the time of the Great War, quite a lot of debate about Prof! . Einstein, and some of Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman's first published writings in England- regarding the physics of musical instruments.

If this sort of thing interests you (and it absolutely captivates me) you should rush to buy this book lest as soon as possible lest it fall out of print.

The Best of Byte
Published in Paperback by Computing McGraw-Hill (January, 1994)
Authors: Jay Ranade, Alan Nash, and Jay Rande
Average review score:

very interesting and informative
The only problem with this book is that there are so many good Byte articles that didn't make the cut. Byte used to have a lot more articles of interest to programmers, and I wish more of those had made it. I would love to see a sequel.

Betrayal in April
Published in Paperback by Ancient Mariners Press (October, 2000)
Authors: Jay, Sr Mallin and Bob Smith
Average review score:

Insightful and historically accurate
This is an excellent book that describes, among other things, historic events in an interesting fictional setting. I thought it was interesting with the recent hub-bub about JFK's back problems that this was mentioned in this book, a couple of years before that recent story. Perhaps the authors knew a thing or two about things that happened. If you would like to know a little more about the Cuban Revolution and Castro's rise to power, but want to learn in an interesting and delightful fictional story, this is a great place to start.

Beyond the Rangeland Conflict : Toward a West That Works
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nevada Pr (January, 2000)
Authors: Dan Dagget and Jay Dusard
Average review score:

Finally Some Common Sense
As an ex cattle rancher who spent way too much time (as did my employees) trying to get similar ideas across to the BLM I find this book to be incredibly refreshing. Ranchers, environmentalists and government range managers should be required to read this book. Daggett is to be commended for having the guts to take on this monumental change in attitude amongst all those named above and he's proved his point. Ranchers need to face the fact that they can change their ways for the betterment of all and evironmentalits and government range managers need to open their eyes to the fact that we are never again going to have the rangelands we had 200 years ago. But, with this approach, we can have the best of both worlds for the range, the ranchers and the public. We can also redirect the incredible amount of time, money and effort that is wasted on the wars between all involved to more productive, peaceful and productive pursuits.

Blueprint for a New Japan: The Rethinking of a Nation
Published in Hardcover by Kodansha International (September, 1994)
Authors: Ichiro Ozawa, Louisa Rubinfien, Eric Gower, and Jay Rockefeller
Average review score:

Thoughtful and challenging ideas to reform Japan
Mr. Ozawa details a variety of ideas to reform and modernize Japan's economy, political system, and society. He advocates more freedom (and responsibility) for the lives of all Japanese. He thinks the government patronizes the citizenry and treats them like dependent children. Mr. Ozawa believes that the Japanese people should be given more freedom to decide how to live their lives. However, he emphasizes that more freedom will require individual citizens to take responsibility for their own fate.
